How to Grow

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your last frost (March–April) in trays of seed compost kept at 18–20 °C, covering lightly. Transplant into 9 cm pots once the first true leaves appear, then harden off and plant outside after frost or direct sow outdoors from May once soil warms. Surface sow in modules or sprinkle thinly in drills, then cover very lightly with compost.

  • Sowing

Sow the white cosmos seeds thinly on good seed compost and cover lightly, keeping the soil moist at all times to encourage germination. Place the tray in a warm, sunny location to ensure successful sprouting.

  • Growing

Space plants 30 cm apart in full sun and pinch the main stem at 20–25 cm to encourage branching. Tall stems (80–100 cm) usually stand on their own, but in windy patches add pea sticks or a low run of mesh as you plant. Deadhead weekly to keep flowers coming from June until frosts. For pots, use at least a 10–15 L container with gritty, free-draining compost.

  • Plant care

Water deeply once or twice a week, allowing the top few centimetres of soil to dry before watering again so roots search downwards. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds; a light tomato feed every few weeks after buds form is enough. Leave a few seed heads in autumn if you’d like self-sown volunteers next spring, or cut to the ground once frost blackens the foliage.
