About Dahlia 'Pompone Mixed'
The Pompone Mixed Dahlia is a tall plant that produces beautiful pom-pom-shaped flowers in varying shades of pink, from pale to cerise, as well as red, burgundy, cream, white, yellow, and orange. Typically, Dahlias are planted as tubers, which is excellent when you need a specific colour or shape for your garden or flower arrangements. However, if you enjoy Dahlias and want a mixture of colours, growing from seed is a fantastic option. Pompone Mixed can grow up to 60cm/2 feet tall and requires support to prevent it from being blown over by the wind. The globe-shaped flowers are ideal for cutting and adding to mixed bouquets of flowers. Growing Dahlias from seed is a simple process and once you try it, you'll wonder why you haven't done it before!
In The Records
The Dahlia genus originates from Mesoamerica, primarily in the high plains of Mexico, with some species found in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. The plant was likely introduced to these regions by the Toltecs or their ancestors. Additionally, the Dahlia was introduced to parts of South America where it still thrives. There are currently 35 recognised species of Dahlia in existence. The Dahlia belongs to the family Compositae (Asteraceae), tribe Heliantheae, and was mistakenly given the genus name "Georgina" in 1803. This name is still used in many parts of Eastern Europe.
