About Sunflower 'Claret'
This plant is renowned for its dependable nature and excellent performance in gardens. Helianthus annus 'Claret' is an annual that grows quickly and has abundant branching. It has broad, oval to heart-shaped leaves that are roughly hairy. During the summer season, it produces striking, large flowers in a deep wine-red hue that can span up to 6 inches across. These blooms feature deep red-brown petals that encircle nearly black central discs.
In The Records
Sunflowers were important to American Indian tribes. The seeds were ground into flour for cakes, and bread, and mixed with other vegetables. They were also eaten as a snack and used to make oil for bread. The plant was used to make purple dye, body paint, and decorations, as well as for medicinal purposes. The stalk was used as a building material and the plant and seeds were used in ceremonies.
