How to Grow

Sow Teddy Bear sunflower seeds outdoors after the last frost, or start them in pots indoors in spring. Choose a sunny spot and well-drained, fertile soil, or a large container with peat-free compost. Thin or transplant seedlings to around 30cm apart so each plant has room to form a full, fluffy pom-pom flower head.

  • Sowing

Sow 1–2 seeds per hole in damp, well-drained soil and cover lightly. Keep in a warm, sunny spot while they germinate.

  • Growing

As dwarf sunflowers, Teddy Bear plants usually reach 60–90cm tall, making them perfect for containers, balconies and small gardens. Water regularly, especially in dry spells, and feed lightly every couple of weeks during the growing season to support strong stems and a long display of soft, golden blooms from midsummer onwards.

  • Plant care

To save Teddy Bear sunflower seeds, allow some flower heads to fade and the backs to turn yellow. Either cover the heads with a breathable bag to protect them from birds, or cut them and dry them indoors somewhere airy. Once fully dry, rub out the seeds and store them in a labelled envelope for next year.
