In her design visions for Sissinghurst Gardens, Vita Sackville-West envisioned ‘a serene sea of grey foliage clusters, intermittently punctuated with towering white blooms,’ and by 1953, she was conveying the unfolding of this vision to her Observer audience.

She detailed a variety of grey mounds including artemisia, the silvery Cineraria maritima, grey santolina, and Achillea ageratifolia. These are interspersed with the vertical white trumpets of Lilium regale and the white towers of eremurus, foxgloves, and delphiniums.

Shrubs like Hydrangea grandiflora, a white cistus, Paeonia suffruticosa subsp. Rockii, and Buddleia nivea, along with trees such as Hippophae rhamnoides, a Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’, and almond trees dotting the central walkway, are incorporated to instill volume and structure. The immense Arabian thistle, Onopordon arabicum, ascends 8 feet skywards, with delicate gypsophila providing a softening touch to the overall plantings.
